Short distance tours: Badia a Passignano
Visiting Badia a Passignano, a small village in the countryside of Florence,
you'll be amazed by the Badia and the castle, you'll have the feeling to be
in medieval times. The small village is quite far from the main roads, over
the river Pesa, only 30 km from Florence. Badia a Passignano owes its
charm to the distance from the main touristic routes.
To go to Badia a Passignano from your hotel
in Florence, you have to take the ring (viali di circonvallazione) follow
to Siena, take the highway from Florence
to Siena, exit for Tavarnelle, follow for Sambuca Val di Pesa and finally to
Badia a Passignano. With normal traffic condition you can have a trip of 40
minutes from the centre of Florence. If you don't have a car or you don't want
to hire one you can use a service of car
rental with driver to make short distance trip from your florence
hotel.
The village is on the ancient "via del Sambuco" that in the past
links Florence and Siena,
and was in use until XIII century. Badia a Passignano, with a tower house from
the XIII century and the church of S. Biagio, is set on an ancient "guardingo"
of Longobards (tower guards). The Castle, from the XI century, was one of the
most powerful of the river Pesa valley.
In the Badia, in its oldiest part dated from the XI century, was an ancient
school, attended by Galileo
Galilei too. The Badia is a fortified monastic complex,
from the XIV and XV century, with towers.
Within the refectory there is a paint of the "ultima cena"
painted by Davide and Domenico del Ghirlandaio. The monastery
in the late XIX century was soppressed and the structure was
used as private villa, tranformed within the trends of the time
in a neogothic castle. From 1986 the monks
vallombrosani had re-taken possesses of the monetery that
is now open on sunday afternoon with guided tour.
